Lyrics
Henry Johnson
By: AJ Bigler
In the Bottom of an old trunk, all yellowed with age
Is the life of Henry Johnson on a written page
There’s a dog eared photograph , army buddies as they laugh
And a letter thanking Henry for their lives
When we asked him what he did in the war,
He quietly said, my duty, and nothing more
(Chorus)
I should have known Henry Johnson better than I did
I know him better through these pages than while he lived
He was a quiet man, not easy to know
(Verse)
In the back of the Church, all covered with drapes
Is a brick with Henries name inscribed
Pastor can finally tell, how Henry saved the church
From the bankers in the spring of 85
When we asked what he did for the lord, all he said was, I kept my word
(Chorus)
He’d come home every night after his 10 hour day
And he always had a smile for his girls’ and boys’
He didn’t seem like much to me, silly child to blind to see
You see we didn’t have the latest toys
But the house was always safe and warm he made sure we were loved
True to form
I should have know Henry Johnson better than I did
A son should know his father not through pages but while he lived
He was a quiet man, not easy to know. But I should have done some reaching even so. So I live with my regret, best man I ever met, I never got to get, to know, Henry Johnson
